Introduction

The short loan collection consists of books and photocopied articles designated as essential reading in connection with courses taught at the Institute. It exists to give fair access to all Courtauld students needing to use material which is in great demand.

The short loan collection is not available to external readers.

Location

Short loan books are located behind the Issue Desk and are issued on presentation of your library card to the librarian on duty.

Photocopies are located inside the catalogue hall and arranged in pamphlet boxes in A-Z author order.

Retrieving short loan material

The online catalogue will show whether an item is held on short loan by displaying 'SHORT LOAN COLL' next to the class number. The item can then be obtained by giving the class number to the Issue Desk Librarian.

Photocopies are listed in a card index which is located above the short loan pamphlet boxes. These may be borrowed without reference to the Issue Desk Librarian, but must remain in the library, and should be returned to the correct box after use.

Readers must present their library card when requesting or reserving short loan books.

Loan Periods

During term time there are 3 loan periods each day:

10.00am - 1.00pm

1.00pm - 4.00pm

4.00pm - 7.00pm (overnight)*

*No short loan books can be issued after 6.50pm. Readers still present in the library who wish to continue reading material already issued to them, may continue to do so during the reading room only hours of 7-9pm.Books should be returned to the Issue Desk before leaving the library.

Up to two books are available per reader for use in the library or for overnight or weekend loan.

Overnight loans

Most short loan books may be loaned overnight, if issued after 4.00pm, and weekend loans are also permitted after 4.00pm on Fridays.

N.B. Short loan books which are borrowed overnight and over the weekend must be returned no later than 10am on the next day of library opening during term time (10.30am during vacation opening). Failure to do so will result in a 7-day suspension of overnight borrowing privileges.

Reserving short loan material

The online catalogue will indicate whether a book has a short loan status.

  • Short loan books may be reserved via the online catalogue, using your library barcode number and PIN
  • You may reserve a short loan book upon application at the Issue Desk, and presentation of your library card.
  • It is not allowed to reserve consecutive slots on one item. (This includes reserving the 4pm slot and the 10am slot for the following day.)
  • Reserved books can only be held for 30 minutes after the beginning of the loan period for which the request was made. Please only reserve books for slots when you will be able to collect them.
  • Short loan photocopies cannot be reserved.

NB Tutor's reading lists are likely to include both 'recommended reading' and short loan material and only the latter will be on the short loan shelves. Always check the online catalogue to confirm the status of an item. You should also note that certain texts may only be available by accessing the course details via the Courtauld VLE (Virtual Learning Environment).
