Home or Overseas?

In order to qualify for ‘home’ fees under this category, you must meet all of the following criteria:

(a) you must be settled in the UK on the first day of the first academic year of the course;

(b) you must be ordinarily resident in the UK on the first day of the first academic year of the course;

(c) you must have been ordinarily resident in the UK and Islands (the Islands means the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) for the full three year period before the first day of the first academic year of the course (for example, if your course begins in October 2010, you must have been ordinarily resident in the UK and Islands from 1 September 2007 to 31 August 2010);

(d) the main purpose for your residence in the UK and Islands must not have been to receive full-time education during any part of that three-year period.

For more information about fee status and term definitions, please refer to the UK Council of International Student Affairs Web site.

Equivalent or Lower Qualifications (ELQ) Policy

As of 2008, the UK government has stopped funding universities for Home students who study a degree which is equivalent to or lower than their current qualification.

Therefore, if you are completing a qualification which is at an equivalent or lower academic level, you will pay a supplement of £3,947 in addition to the Home fee stated above.

Please visit the Department for Business Innovation & Skills for more information about this policy.

If you are unsure whether you hold an ELQ, you may find this National Qualifications Framework factsheet helpful:

COST OF LIVING

Mercer’s Worldwide Cost of Living Survey has consistently cited London as one of the most expensive cities in the world; however, London is very student-friendly, and your cost of living as a student will depend largely upon your lifestyle choices.

The UNIAID Student Calculator is a handy resource to help you plan your budget. Many retailers and entertainment venues will offer discounts or concession prices when you present your student ID.

If you plan to be out and about often, don’t forget to apply for a student Oyster card online via Transport for London. You cannot apply for this in advance of enrolment.
