At any given time, the total student population of The Courtauld is about 400 students from BA to PhD level, which means you can meet students from all courses and years. About 150 of these are undergraduate, about 170 are admitted onto the MA courses, and 100 are working toward a PhD either at The Courtauld or abroad.We treat our students as adults and value their active participation in classes. The Courtauld is not a production line; we will give you the opportunity to be yourself, to hone your interests and discover for yourself what you'd like to research.
Our Students
Courtauld students are among the most satisfied with their courses in Britain, according to two recent studies. In the 2009 UK National Student Survey (NSS), The Courtauld was ranked fourth in the country. 93% of students were satisfied with the teaching, learning resources and academic support they receive.
The Courtauld also came top of The Times Higher Education Ranking, which aims to show which universities offer the best all-round student experience.

The Courtauld Students’ Union’s primary function is to represent the interests of all Courtauld students on institutional, London-based and national levels. They also offer a much smaller, more personal base for social activity within the Courtauld, arranging parties, quiz nights and music nights.

The Courtauld is located in historic Somerset House on The Strand, right in the heart of London's West End.
The Courtauld is located in Somerset House on The Strand, a grand, historic building in the heart of London's West End. Built in 1779, it was the original home of the Royal Academy of Arts, the Royal Society and the Society of Antiquaries.
One of the world's most dynamic cities, London is a global hub for cultural, business, political, media, legal and sporting events that attract the best from around the world. The city provides an incredibly rich source of learning and entertainment with all the attractions and amenities of a thriving contemporary city.
We are able to house about 80 students who apply for accommodation (40 postgraduates and 40 undergraduates), and international and first year BA students are given priority.
Student Resources
Courtauld students have direct access to unparalleled resources. Our book and image libraries house some of the most significant art historical collections in the country.
The Book Library provides access to a significant art historical collection at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and is one of the major international research collections of art-historical books, periodicals and exhibition catalogues in the country, currently numbering some 180,000 volumes.
The Courtauld continues to develop its digital presentations for use by staff, students and the public. Complete catalogues of painting, print and drawing collections are available online through Art and Architecture. Digital exhibition projects, such as Past in Present: Revivals in Art and Architecture, and Professor Joanna Woodall's Picturing the Netherlandish Canon make scholarship available to the broadest possible audience.
As well as the Book Library, students have access to The Courtauld's vast collection of images and reproductions.
Students can also consult the extensive collection of prints and drawings, including old master drawings, in the Prints and Drawings Study Room.
The student café offers students and visitors delicious home cooking made on site in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and at reasonable prices.
The Courtauld provides numerous IT services and facilities for students.
