The Courtauld is located in Somerset House on The Strand, a grand, historic building in the heart of London's West End. Built in 1779, it was the original home of the Royal Academy of Arts, the Royal Society and the Society of Antiquaries.
The institute's move from Portland Square to Somerset House in 1989 meant that the Courtauld collection could be exhibited in its grand rooms, and it soon became one of the capital's major tourist attractions.
In recent years Somerset House has become a major arts and cultural centre: during summer months 55 fountains dance in the courtyard, and in winter you can skate on London's favourite ice rink.
It also programmes contemporary art and design exhibitions, free displays, family workshops and guided tours, and is home to London Fashion Week.
