East Wing Collection

The East Wing Collection 06 website

was hosted and maintained separately from the Courtauld website.
East Wing Collection No.6 explored the theme of Urban Networks. The exhibition addressed notions such as surveillance and walking. Works in the collection were encountered through the terms Routes / Sites / Groups / Positions. The diverse mix of established artists, newly emerging professionals, students and those working within a didactic workshop environment created an exciting and stimulating exhibition.

Site-specific work such as that by performance group Wrights & Sites encouraged visitors to negotiate the warren-like spaces of the Courtauld’s rarely-seen interior, offering a challenging alternative to the now familiar white cube spaces of contemporary art display. The exhibition presented an exciting new work by Mel Bochner alongside Michael Wesely’s haunting time-delay photography. Isaac Julien’s Undressing Icons series was shown in its entirety for the first time in the UK, and Franko B’s recent Still Life project founds its way into the corridor spaces of the Institute.

In addition, there were workshop pieces by artists affiliated to organisations SMart and Capital A, as well as the 1994 project 'Other Men’s Flowers’ initiated by Joshua Compston, founder of the East Wing Collection, featuring the work of prominent British artists.

The East Wing Collection is a biennial exhibition curated by students at the Courtauld Institute of Art and displayed in the building for a period of two years.
A lively program of film screenings and artists’ talks, including Martha Rosler, Franko B, Kira O’Reilly and Genesis P-Orridge, supported the 06 collection exhibition.
An illustrated catalogue also accompanied the show.
