Paul Signac: Travels in France
7 June - 19 August 2001
Paul Signac, Saint Tropez: View
from the Citadel Hill, 1899
The Courtaulds summer exhibition brought together a collection
of drawings and water-colours by the Neo-Impressionist artist Paul Signac, on
loan from the Arkansas Arts Center after a recent showing in Paris. Signacs work
is best known for its exploration of colour and light and this exhibition demonstrates
his love of watercolour as a means of depicting the bright, colourful landscapes
of the coasts of France. From the sunlit shores around Saint Tropez to the ports
of France, to which he devoted a series of views towards the end of his life,
Signac captures the spirit of summer in an ideal Impressionist medium.
