The Gallery Education Department worked with patients and staff from Mental Health NHS Trusts in East London and South Birmingham (earlier this year) to create paintings and sculptures using works from the Gallery's collections to inspire them. These outreach projects were sponsored by the Royal College of Psychiatrists as part of a year-long celebration of the arts, the mind and psychiatry, 2001: A Mind Odyssey. The project and exhibition has generated a huge amount of interest and the outreach programme is oversubscribed.

Some of the work has been displayed in an exhibition in the Gallery Café which will then tour various hospitals whilst some work will be on permanent displays in the schools, hospitals and day centres, where the work was created.

The Education Department will be curating regular exhibitions in the Gallery Café, providing an opportunity for participants in future programmes to display their work.
