The Courtauld Institute of Art is pleased to welcome the renowned Latin American critic, curator and cultural commentator María Elena Ramos, who is visiting London.
María Elena Ramos is highly regarded for her work as a critic and commentator on the arts and the distinguished former director of the Fundación Museo de Bellas Artes Caracas (1989-2001). She has been vocal in her opposition to State control of the cultural sector in Venezuela, participating in a vibrant and resistant cultural vanguard. Her interests range across a spectrum of ideas, cultures and histories, including the fine arts, photography, architecture and urban spaces. María Elena Ramos received her masters degree and doctorate from the Universidad Simon Bolivar, Caracas. For fourteen years she held the post of art critic in the weekly literary journal ‘Papel Literario’ in the leading independent newspaper, El Nacional, and is the author of major studies and monographs including: Juan Lovera y su Tiempo (1978), Pista para quedar mirando (1991), Acciones frente a la plaza (1995), Intervenciones en el espacio (1998), Armónico-Disonante. Reflexiones sobre arte y estética (2001), Fotociudad. Estética urbana y lenguaje (2003), and more recently Diálogos con el Arte, Entrevistas 1976-2007, interviews with the philosophers Jean Baudrillard, J. F. Lyotard and Stanley Cavell, among others.
This informal gathering and welcome will take place in Seminar Room 2 this Tuesday, 2 November at 6.00pm. Refreshments served. All welcome.
