After Conceptualism: Performing Transference circa 1977

Monday 18 February
18.00, Research Forum South Room

Speaker(s): Dr William McManus (Terra Foundation for American Art Postdoctoral Fellow, The Courtauld)
Ticket/entry details: Open to all, free admission
Organised by: Dr Klara Kemp-Welch

Oriented by Vito Acconci’s The Red Tapes (1977) this seminar will survey the shift toward narrative in much video and film-based American art of the mid-1970s. Along with Acconci, artists such as Dan Graham, Anthony McCall, James Nares, Yvonne Rainer, and others began to relinquish a task-directed and scripted self (either as implicit actor or visible object) as the primary and emphatic compositional tool of their work and to incorporate it into more acculturated environments enabled by film and video. Beyond clarifying historical turns in these older artists’ work, the basic arguments will be extended to bear on certain claims made for “activist” art in the present.
