CoURTAULD EXPERT TOUR:
THE SOCIETY OF ANTIQUARIES
MONDAY 1 FEBRUARY,
10.30AM – 12.30PM
Burlington House, Piccadilly
For: Patrons’ Circle and Director’s Circle
Professor Eric Fernie CBE FBA, Courtauld
alumnus, former Director of The Courtauld
and former President of the Society of
Antiquaries, and alumna Julia Dudkiewicz
(MA2003), Collections Manager, will lead
this privileged tour of the Society at
Burlington House which is not usually
accessible to the public.
Founded in 1707 the Society of Antiquaries
of London is one of several learned societies
located in Burlington House. Prior to its move
to Burlington House in 1875 the Society
occupied rooms at Somerset House. The
Society’s principal concern is the study and
advancement of archaeology and associated
disciplines related to the study of the past.
Its historic library and museum collections
comprise printed materials, manuscripts,
prints and drawings, paintings and artefacts.

MICHELANGELO’S DREAM

Patrons’ Circle and Director’s Circle members
are invited to a small and exclusive viewing
of the exhibition prior to the main Private
View with a tour by Courtauld Curator of
Drawings and
curator of the exhibition,
Dr Stephanie Buck.
Michelangelo’s Dream is one of the finest
of all Italian Renaissance drawings and is
amongst The Courtauld’s greatest treasures.
Executed at the height of the artist’s
career, this magnificent work exemplifies
Michelangelo’s unrivalled skill as a
draughtsman and his extraordinary
powers of invention.
The exhibition will explore the making
and meaning of this celebrated drawing
in the context of closely related works by
Michelangelo and his contemporaries.

THE NEW ASHMOLEAN GALLERIES
SATURDAY 20 FEBRUARY,
11.00AM – 12.30PM
followed by an optional lunch
For: Associates, Patrons’ Circle and
Director’s Circle
Director of the Ashmolean Museum of Art and
Archaeology, Dr Christopher Brown (Courtauld
PhD 1986), will lead an exclusive tour of the 39
new galleries which are breathtaking in their
design and offer a completely fresh approach
to the display of the collections.
The Ashmolean first opened in the 17th
century and is widely regarded as the
greatest university museum in the world. In
November 2009 the Ashmolean completed a
radical £61 million redevelopment designed
by award-winning architect Rick Mather that
has doubled the gallery space.
Following the tour guests can stay for lunch
or continue to enjoy the galleries at their
leisure or visit other important Oxford art
institutions such as Modern Art Oxford.

THE SEILERN TRIPTYCH
TUESDAY 23 FEBRUARY

An opportunity to gain a fascinating insight
into a single work with two great Courtauld
experts. Dr Joanna Cannon and Dr Susie
Nash will jointly discuss and debate the
Seilern Triptych, one of the most exquisite
early Netherlandish works in the Gallery’s
collections, attributed to the Tournai painter
Robert Campin, and part of the Count
Antoine Seilern bequest.

PrIVATE ART COLLECTION VISIT

Art advisor Anne Berthoud has kindly invited
Director’s Circle members to see her private
art collection of contemporary art at her
beautiful apartment in Notting Hill.
Anne Berthoud is half English, half Swiss
and well known in the contemporary art
world. She owned a gallery in the West End
for 12 years and in 1982 she had the only
show of Frank Auerbach’s drawings. Since
then Anne has been advising collectors from
her lovely flat in Notting Hill. Her collection
includes art by Lucian Freud, Frank Auerbach,
Grayson Perry, Basil Beattie and light boxes
by Elisa Sighicelli and Catherine Yass. She
loves sharing her enthusiasm for young
(and older) living artists.

TEFAF, MASSTRICHT
THURSDAY 11 – SUNDAY 21 MARCH
For: Patrons’ Circle and Director’s Circle
TEFAF Maastricht is the world’s leading fine
art fair which offers a unique chance to view
paintings from Bruegel to Bacon as well as
objects reflecting 6,000 years of excellence in
the applied arts.
With many Courtauld alumni and supporters
going to Maastricht for the occasion, it is
an ideal opportunity to bring members of
our extended community together. We
are delighted to offer Patrons’ Circle and
Director’s Circle members invitations to
the Private View on Thursday 11 March,
Fair passes for the duration of the event,
a highlight tour of the top 10 galleries by
a Courtauld expert on Saturday 13 March
followed by a private drinks reception at
the stunning Kruisherenhotel.

MEET EDGAR DEGAS’ BRONZES
TUESDAY 23 MARCH, 6.30 – 8.00PM

For: Patrons’ Circle and Director’s Circle
Although Edgar Degas is better known as a
painter, his contemporaries viewed him as
the most original and accomplished sculptor
of his day. Dr Alexandra Gerstein, Curator of
Sculpture and Decorative Arts, will take the
perspex cases off The Courtauld’s stunning
collection of Degas’ bronze sculptures of
dancers for guests to get a unique close-up
view and will discuss Degas’ bold approach
to the art of sculpture.

ETON COLLEGE’S 15TH-CENTURY
WALL PAINTINGS
MONDAY 26 APRIL, 4.00 – 6.00PM (TOUR)

Founded by Henry VI in 1440, Eton College
is renowned for its late medieval and
Tudor architecture. Among the exquisite
contemporary furnishings are the 15thcentury
wall paintings in the Chapel, the
finest surviving late medieval wall paintings
in England. The visit will also provide a rare
opportunity to see the amazing wall painting,
dating from c.1520, recently discovered in
the Head Master’s Chambers and showing
the Head Master teaching the boys. The
visit will be guided by Professor David Park,
Director of the Conservation of Wall Painting
Department at The Courtauld, and Henrietta
Ryan, the College’s Keeper of Paintings, Prints
and Drawings, and will conclude with a reception
hosted by the Provost, Lord Waldegrave.

PrIVATE ART COLLECTION VISIT
TUESDAY 4 MAY, 6.30 – 8.00PM
For: Director’s Circle
We are honoured that Samuel Courtauld
Society Patron Lord Browne of Madingley
is offering a private view of his stunning
home and garden exclusively for Director’s
Circle members. The interior of the house
was designed to reflect the original design
dating back to the 1750s but with modern
clean cut elegance that lets the furniture
and paintings speak for themselves while
the garden design was based on the tonal
colours of a Vermeer painting.
Lord Browne
has a stunning collection of pre-Columbian
and contemporary art and an extraordinary
collection of Venetian books. Accompanied
by Professor Deborah Swallow, this will be a
unique opportunity to meet Lord Browne and
hear about his passion for art and collecting.
Lord Browne is the President of the Academy
of Engineering, Chairman of the Board of
Trustees of Tate galleries, Fellow of the Royal
Society and former Chief Executive of BP.

THE CONSERVATION DEPARTMENT
TUESDAY 18 MAY, 6.30 – 8.00PM
The Courtauld Gallery

This is a rare chance to go behind the scenes of
The Courtauld’s Conservation and Technology
Department. During the tour you will see some
of the paintings currently being conserved
and learn about the fascinating work of the
department from Dr Aviva Burnstock, Head of
Conservation and Technology. The tour will be
followed by a drinks reception in the Gallery.

new acquisitions, Joshua Reynolds’s late
masterpiece Cupid and Psyche.
