This autumn, event highlights include an evening reception at Downing Street hosted by Sarah Brown, an exclusive art trip to Munich designed and led by Courtauld experts and events which illuminate The Courtauld's collections. All this as well as invitations to exhibition opening parties and private breakfasts. We hope there is something to interest you and we look forward to welcoming you during the autumn season.

COURTAULD EXPERT DAY TRIP:
HENRY MOORE'S HOME AT PERRY GREEN

For: Associates, Patrons’ Circle and Director’s Circle
Courtauld alumnus and Director of the Henry Moore Foundation, Richard Calvocoressi, hosts a special visit to Henry Moore's home and studio at Perry Green in Hertfordshire. Highlights of the day will include a tour of the revelatory exhibition Henry Moore Textiles, an opportunity to see inside the Moore's fully restored home and an open air dispaly of Moore's sculptures.

Patrons' and Director’s Circle members are invited to a private drinks reception to view the Beyond Bloomsbury exhibition at which curator Dr Sacha Gerstein will be joined in conversation with Mary Schoeser who collaborated on the project. Mary is a Courtauld alumna and expert in textile design. Sacha and Mary will discuss Omega’s lasting influence on textile design and dress making - it is sure to be a lively and enlightening evening!

VIEW AND TOUR OF TURNER AND THE MASTERS

Professor David Solkin, Dean and Deputy Director of The Courtauld, and curator of Tate Britain's forthcoming exhibition Turner and the Masters leads this exclusive early morning tour of the show for Patrons and Director's Circle members. This magnificent show features world-class masters such as Canaletto, Claude, Poussin, Rembrandt, Rubens and Titian, and explores how Turner hoped to imitate, rival and outshine many of the greatest painters in history.

Patrons’ Circle and Director’s Circle members are invited to preview the Auerbach exhibition with a talk by Dr Barnaby Wright, Daniel Katz Curator of 20th Century art at The Courtauld and curator of this exhibition. The exhibtion will be the first to bring together the seminal group of paintings of London building sites by Frank Auerbach, one of Britain’s greatest living artists.

All members are invited to join us for the Private View night to see the exhibition before it opens to the public. Fascinated by the rebuilding of London after the war, Auerbach combed the city’s numerous building sites with sketchbook in hand, gathering material for a series of remarkable paintings which are among the most important contributions to post-war British art. The exhibition has received some important support from the Samuel Courtauld Society membership through a grant from the Friends of the Courtauld.

Guests can also enjoy The Courtauld Gallery ’s world-renowned collection of Old Masters, Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works.

Following the success of the first Samuel Courtauld Society trip last year to Warsaw, Professor Deborah Swallow warmly invites Patrons and Director’s Circle members to join her and Dr Satish Padiyar (Courtauld Lecturer in 18th and 19th century art) and other Courtauld experts on a specially designed visit to Munich to explore the City's art and architectural gems. Highlights include visits to private art collections and a trip to Gabrielle Munter’s House in the countryside.

An opportunity to gain a fascinating insight into a single work by two great Courtauld experts. Dr Joanna Cannon and Dr Susie Nash will jointly discuss and debate Seilern Triptych, one of the most exquisite early Netherlandish works in the Gallery's collections, attributed to the Tournai painter Robert Campin, and part of the Count Antoine Seilern bequest.

Victoria and Albert Museum

The Victoria and Albert Museum's Medieval and Renaissance collection is outstanding in its depth and range and contains some of the greatest surviving treasures of the period 300 - 1600. In December 2009 the V&A will open 10 new galleries showcasing this remarkable collection. Shortly after it opens to the public, Patrons' and Director's Circle members are invited to join Dr Caroline Campbell, the Courtauld's Schroder Foundation Curator of Paintings, for a personal tour of the collection highlights. The group is welcome to stay on after the tour for coffees and pastries in the private members' room.

MEET A SCULPTURE: BEAUNEVEU’S VIRGIN AND CHILD
WEDNESDAY 9 DECEMBER

Dr Susie Nash - whose post is part funded by Samuel Courtauld Society donations - celebrates the newly acquired loan, Virgin and Child, which is a life-size limestone sculpture attributed to the major 14th century Flemish artist André Beauneveu, who was one of the most gifted artists in France. This monumental statue is an outstanding example of late Gothic sculpture and the only example of his work on public view in Britain. All members are warmly invited to this event where there will be seasonal treats such as minced pies and festive cocktails!
