The HEFCE Challenge
Your questions answered
You can help The Courtauld take advantage of a unique opportunity to attract up to £2.75m of funding through a one-off matched giving programme run by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). For every £3 you donate The Courtauld will receive £1 in matched funding from HEFCE – donations of all levels count! All donations must be received in cash by 31 July 2011 to enable The Courtauld to claim the match. All matched funds will be allocated to The Courtauld’s endowment to provide continuing support for The Courtauld and future generations of students.
What is the HEFCE Matched Funding challenge?
The Higher Education Funding Council of England (HEFCE) is running a matched funding programme for universities UK-wide. The Courtauld is one of 200 universities taking part in the scheme which aims to raise the profile of the impact that philanthropic gifts have on higher education, from the support of academic posts and scholarships to important resources and research.
What gifts are eligible?
Philanthropic gifts to The Courtauld of any size are eligible (including Friends and Samuel Courtauld Society membership and Annual Fund gifts) from both inside or outside the UK. And, for a UK tax payer, any Gift Aid that the gift attracts will also be matched.
What will The Courtauld do with the funds?
The Courtauld will direct the £2.75m matched funding to its endowment. The Courtauld’s goal is to secure a minimum endowment fund of £50m to provide regular annual income to support its current and future academics and students, and plans for the Institute and the Gallery. The endowment currently stands at £25.5m.
Are there any key rules or guidelines?
Yes – The Courtauld can only claim the matched funding if the total amount raised is received in cash by the due date of 31 July 2011. Therefore any pledges that are not fulfilled by the deadline cannot be matched - nor can legacy or sponsorship income.
How long is the matched giving programme?
The matched fund programme started on 1 August 2008 and runs for three years until 31 July 2011.
How much has The Courtauld raised so far?
The Courtauld has raised £7m in cash and pledges and has a further £1.2m to raise by the deadline.
